The cost of renting or buying a home is unaffordable for scores of people in big cities. In London, more people than ever before are paying to live as “property guardians” — residing in disused buildings such as office blocks, schools and even an old cathedral — to save money on rent. Property guardianship originated in the Netherlands in the 1980s as a way for landlords to secure their vacant buildings, and often attracted twenty-something creatives looking for large spaces to do their work. But now, more people in their thirties and forties are signing on as rents in the British capital remain sky-high.
